OUTSTANDING South Coast athletes Madeline Heiner and Sophia Begg have been named in the Australian team for the World Junior Championships in China in August.

Wollongong junior Heiner will compete in the 1500m and 3000m steeplechase and Hill Top-based Illawarra Blue Stars member Sophia Begg has been selected in the high jump.

The young stars are among the 18 NSW track and field athletes, led by Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Dani Samuels, heading to China.

The national team will participate in a number of camps in the coming months, which also double as the NSW Skins Winter Allcomers Track and Field Series.

Meanwhile, Gerroa's Sally Fitzgibbons, a member of the Kembla Joggers running club who is also a talented surfer, has been selected in the under 17 national youth development squad.

Athletics Australia has announced its first under 17 national youth development squad, with Fitzgibbons among 22 NSW athletes.

The athletes will meet for two development camps this year, the first at Runaway Bay in Queensland on June 23. All athletes will have the opportunity to experience top level coaching and education sessions, and hear from guest speakers.
